Make a Recycled Hoopla Party Game

With Kids Craft Author Sydney Piercey

Sydney Piercey is a mother of three who is passionate about re-use, creativity and pursuing a slower, more sustainable life. Previously a nanny before having her own children, she’s now making waves online with her cardboard play creations. Sydney’s first book, Sustainable Play, will be released this Spring – featuring over 60 cardboard crafts and games for an earth-kind home.

So who better to share an eco-friendly activity for Earth Day than Sydney? “This homemade hoopla game is a fun idea for all ages, the best bit being that you can reuse the party plates to create it!” says Sydney. “I love reusing items around the home to make toys and games. Not only is it fun and budget- friendly, it’s great for the planet too.”

You Will Need:

A length of scrap cardboard
Paper plates (or you can use cardboard for this)
5 kitchen roll tubes (or 10 loo roll tubes taped together)
Scissors
Hobby knife
Tape

How to Make:

1. Cut two long lengths of cardboard and arrange them in a X. Tape them together on the underside.

2. Arrange your 5 tubes, one on each corner of the X and one in the centre. Draw around them with your hobby knife so as you are left with 5 holes for your tubes to fit into snugly.

3. Slide your tubes into the holes, 1/8 of the way through and cut 6 slits all around the short side, folding the slits back.

4. Tape the slits in place so that the tubes stand up straight in the X and don’t budge.

5. Fold your used paper plates in half and cut a semi-circle out from the centre so as to create your hoops.

6. Repeat this for as many plates as you have (or cut rings from cardboard) and you’re ready to play!

7. To play, players take turns throwing rings onto the posts from an agreed distance.

8. You can add difficulty by giving each post a different number score (write the numbers onto your tubes).

9. The winner is the player or team with the highest number of hoops or scores. A fun and sustainable game for all ages!
